Behaviour Support and Social Skills

What is Positive Behaviour Support?

Positive behaviour support (PBSP) is a research-based approach that aims to enhance the quality of life while reducing problematic behaviour. Here are some key points about PBS:

  1. Understanding and Changing Behaviour:
    • PBS focuses on understanding why certain behaviours occur and how to modify them effectively.
    • It avoids punitive strategies and instead emphasizes positive approaches.

  1. Core Principles of PBS:
    • Individualized: PBS tailors interventions to each person’s unique needs.
    • Environment and Context: It considers the environment and social context in which behaviour occurs.
    • Skills Teaching: PBS teaches new skills to replace problem behaviours.
    • Rights and Dignity: It values and protects the individual’s rights and dignity.

  1. Benefits of PBS:
    • Quality of Life: PBS aims to improve overall well-being.
    • Effective Support: It ensures that support aligns with an individual’s goals.
    • Relationship Building: PBS helps build positive relationships.
    • Choice and Control: It promotes autonomy and decision-making.
    • Safety and Understanding: Better understanding of needs and behaviour.
    • Reduced Restrictive Practices: Minimizes the use of restrictive measures.

  1. Behaviour Support Plans:
    • These plans are collaboratively developed and include strategies to address behaviours of concern.
